Economies of Contemporary Art

The Theme: Materialism (The theory or attitude that physical well-being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life)

The media is enormously responsible for the way society view beauty and wealth. Nowadays people misuse beauty to make money and use money to get beauty. Humans integrated these two earthly possessions and made them almost inseparable. Beauty and money are neither good nor evil. It depends on a situation, intention and its effect on others. Throughout this essay, issues on the good and bad part of materialism will be discussed and also the visuals on both images are compared.
Visually both pictures are different from each other. The medium for both images are totally different; ‘before and after’ is a synthetic polymer on canvas whereas ‘rolls of bills’ is done with a pencil, crayon, and felt-tip pen on paper.
The first image “before and After” is a 2D black and white piece of art using smooth and simple lines with varied thickness to accentuate the drawing. The drawing as a whole is a clean drawing because of the limited number of lines used and the simplicity of it, just contributes to its neat cartoonish appearance. The image is more indirect in the way that it is a liberal picture, viewers have to first compare and identify the changes in the “before and after” picture then they can come up with the theme of the image.
The second image “Roll and Bills” has some color in it and shading is apparent to emphasize the image and make it appear more 3 dimensional. The usage of coarse and thin fine lines in this drawing makes it a little bit more messy compare to the first image but also more realistic because it captures the actual lighting in an authentic environment by using different shades of grey to highlight particular areas and color to stress that feel of green American dollars. The second drawing it speaks directly for itself. It does not have any background or funky color to distract the viewers. The space around the object is minimal which actually strengthens the focus on the object. The message in this particular drawing is simple, straight, forward and strong.
Thematically both pictures are talking about beauty and wealth, which make these two pictures related to each other, because rich people uses their wealthy in order to make themselves beautiful and confident somehow. The plastic surgery was the first thing that it came to mind because people nowadays are trying to change part of their body just to be more beautiful, pretty and attractive and in some way they want to show themselves off and want to say that they got money and they got everything. These are the icons that people want in their life and they are dying for these materialistic things. The meanings of both pictures are in conflict because both of them represents good and also bad.
The unpleasant side of the first image portrays human ego, vainness and their shallow minds. Human in general want to be accepted in society and what our society wants is beauty. They set a standard for beauty and this has caused havoc in the minds of insecure humans. The perception is then to reach the standard set by a bunch of equal Joe’s or stay at the bottom of the social class for life. The second picture is more about greed and dirtiness. Money is the root of all evil; but then again money is what develops a country, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and it just makes the world goes around. Money is a top priority in most household these days and more people are beginning to realize how fallacious this is. But still people do not change. They are selfish and flaunty.
The good side of the first picture would be that beauty is subjective. It’s not wrong to go after beauty, it’s human nature to find beauty and want beauty in their life, people want to hold on to beauty. Boundaries do not exist when one wants to determine if something is beautiful. The only rule is that one loves it and wants to cherish it. It is a personal view and idea where no one is suppose to judge and say if it’s a right or wrong view. It is not restricted to just one specific trait; example things can be beautiful, birthday celebrations too or even someone’s personality. Beauty is confidence. As for plastic surgery it’s not completely bad; for instance people who were involved in an accident might be severely disfigured and it would be really good for them to have plastic surgery on those damaged body parts.
The good side of the second picture; is that those green paper notes are able to help people, share money in order to help others and to develop new medicine to cure diseases. Basically to survive in this world and getting our basic needs such as food, water, transportation and more. It makes the world goes around.
In summary materialism should not be judged because it possess goodness and also evil. These two pictures are just reminders that there are boundaries between want and need. Almost all the time we are not able to differentiate those two and we end up being sucked into the media’s lie. Yes it is human nature to be greedy, vain and selfish but it is also human nature to have human compassion and love.

Materials of Contemporary Art

Biography of Eric Fischl

Eric Fischl was born in New York City in 1948; Eric Fischl grew up in the suburbs of Long Island, his parents having moved there shortly before his second year."Safer place to raise a family", they used to say. Against a backdrop of alcoholism and a country club culture obsessed with image over content, Fischl became focused on the rift between what was experienced and what could not be said. Until the late 70's, suburbia was not considered a legitimate genre for art. With his first New York show at the Edward Thorp Gallery, epithets like "psycho-sexual suburban dramas" became velcroed to his disturbing images of dysfunctional family life.

Fischl began his art education in Phoenix, Arizona where his parents had moved in 1967. First at Phoenix Junior College, then a year at Arizona State University, and finally getting his BFA in 1972 at the recently opened California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. After graduation he moved to Chicago where he worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was in Chicago that Fischl was exposed to the non-mainstream art of the Hairy Who. "The underbelly, carnie world of Ed Paschke and the hilarious sexual vulgarity of Jim Nutt were revelatory experiences for me.", Fischl has said. In 1974, he got a job teaching painting at the highly touted Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. It is there that he met his future wife, the painter, April Gornik. In 1978 they moved to New York City where they continue to live and work.

I choose the work by Eric Fischl titled “Birthday Boy” dated back in 1983. It is oil on canvas with the size 84 by 108 inches. This art really caught my attention because of the truth I see in it. The word sex popped up in my head at first glance. A naked woman on the bed with red sheets, she appears to be in an expensive looking room together with her companion and from the looks through those large windows that they were in the city on a high floor at night. The boy looks young, Inexperienced, possible virgin (or not) or maybe he is bored or thinking about something. She looks like she doesn’t care because she is satisfied, happy, relieved and carefree because she has this smirk on her face and it is much more obvious compare to the young boy. The powerful color of the sheet just makes this picture more interesting, alive and apparently sexy which is counterbalanced by the soft dull background. Of course I would say that the main attraction or the emphasis in this picture is the naked woman and the “Birthday Boy” on the red sheet. That is the whole idea in this painting. The young companion (Birthday Boy) is so far back and his features are not as detailed as the woman. When examine in more detail we can see that the woman and the boy are actually touching each other; on his shoulder and on her leg. This portrays closeness and somewhat a feel of intimacy, which represents human emotions and also it, reminds me of seduction and also it reminds me of the movie THE GRADUATE by DUSTIN HOFFMAN which was about seducing. This picture is balanced in the sense that it looks natural. It is not rigid nor is it too harsh. Even from the expression on the faces of the woman and the young boy we can see that there is balance in this picture.

The room is lit by lights from outside and also inside the room. There are two lamps in the picture; one is on a table that is next to a red food tray. On the red tray is a newspaper with a glass of water, but there is a spoon in the glass, so it may contain some kind of alcohol or lemon. Next to the glass on the red tray is a pitcher of water. The lighting in the room seems to make the water have a yellow tint. The second lamp is located behind the young man’s head which it looks like a halo that means he is an innocent or it can say that the boy was curious about the whole action between him and her; the main colors that stand out are red, the contrast to the white and plainness of the room

As observed in the painting the open curtains allow some of the city lights to brighten up the room and the lamps on the table shine on certain corners to give the bright appearance of the room. Some forms can be found in this picture such as the room itself, the bed and some of the glassware on the desk. The space created in this picture seems to emphasize the bed area. The background is plain and simple such as the painting on the almost-empty wall with red, black, purple, orange colors on it and the blur view of the city through the glass window. The painter uses different shades to make the picture more realistic for example the sheet is red but it looks creased. He uses different shades of red to highlight the rising part and darker shades to make it seem like it is the lower part of the sheet. The texture of the red sheet is a bit more folded and creased. The skin of the two beings in the picture gives out a sense of warmth and of course skin like texture.

The movement of this particular piece is from the desk with the glassware, newspaper and table lamp to the main bed and then lastly I would have to say is the background which consists of the glass windows and the walls. This picture is drawn from the corner of the room and its proportion is just about right and real as compared to a real life situation. The things on the desk appear almost the same size as the woman in the picture because it is closer to the artist view. This picture possesses unity and balance. The choice of bold to dull plain colors even out the energy and the subtleness of the picture.

To conclude, this artist has a certain pattern or signature of that red sheet which actually symbolizes love and sex. What he feels is that these properties are connected and are dependent on one another; in other words, one cannot exist without the other. Overall this picture is beautiful, unique, daring, sexy and honest. The lights and open curtains made it feel really bold and just breaking the taboo. Its unconventional in a way at the same time it is not hard to imagine this in a real life situation. The elements and principles brought up in this painting are just perfectly balanced and adequate to send the message through to the audience. After all it is about sex and love

Inspiration of My Idea

I got the idea for my assignment when i was in my room. I saw a box underneath my bed with balloons and teddy bear on it. It gave me the idea of a gift box because back in Iran every time i attend a birthday party i would always buy a present box to make my birthday gift look presentable. It is also less fussy compare to wrapping the present with a present paper. Not just for birthdays but whenever we get a gift for someone for any celebration it would be in a gift box. So this habit of ours just gave me the idea of gift boxes for a birthday card.
Balloons at parties makes the whole celebration colorful and alive. It was at almost every birthday party that i attended and it does set the mood for a great party and celebration.

FINAL WORK

Birthday Text Design

For the text part I came up with 3 balloons for the background to add a birthday mood to the text using ellipse tool then i made the balloons look 3d using EFFECT>3D>Revolve and then for the strings i used ARC TOOL, and for the text i choose VINER HAND ITC font

Final Step

And for the final part i combined the whole thing together and i used different colors and i used the type tools to arrange the words on the boxes.

Step 5

Next step is another open present box with the confetti and minor fireworks. I used pen tool to create the box and brush tools for the confetti es and fireworks
